Resizing vs. Relocating

A homeowner knows that there is more cost involved in moving than in improving your existing home. Relocating involves a seperation from many things that are important to you and your family. Such as your neighborhood, school, place of worship, family, friends and favorite establishments. Also, you may encounter the same problems with buying a new home as you did with your old home.

The homeowner must look hard at the dollar cost of moving verses the cost of improving. It's a fact that the cost of moving to a new house can be very expensive after points, fees ,escrow, commissions, moving expenses, etc.

Also, another point is to consider the property taxes when buying a new home. They are usually considerably more than what you are currently paying.

The homeowner knows what is involved with moving. Having to sell your home involves a lot of work and stress.  Keeping it constantly clean, showing it  to strangers, packing all your belongings, can be a daunting task.

When doing an analysis of your home, a positive approach is to ask what is it that you want or need. Also, ask yourself  what  needs correcting, repairing or updating.

There are the obvious reasons to add on or to remodel your home. You may need a larger family room, more bedrooms or bathrooms, a great room, a kitchen, a masterbedroom, a mother/father in-law suite, a larger garage, new windows, siding and trim, new porch, curb appeal, or maybe several of the above.

All things considered, resizing or remodeling is often the winner over relocating. The cost of the improvement is often substantially less than relocating and you get to stay where you are.
